About Jan

Jan Mitchell is a multifaceted individual – a mother, caregiver, widow, author, speaker, and grief coach. She hails from the vibrant city of Indianapolis, Indiana, and stands out among her four siblings with her bright spirit and resilient nature. Jan's life was profoundly altered by the loss of her husband, Stephen Lee Mitchell, in 2017, followed by the passing of both in-laws within a week, just two years later. Her journey took another challenging turn in 2022 when she became the caregiver for a parent battling dementia, deepening her understanding of caregiver grief.


Jan is the author of the "Suddenly Single" anthology series, including "Surviving the Demise of Your Relationship" and "Navigating Grief While Colliding With Purpose." Her voice has resonated on platforms like WISH-TV 8, Gospel Grind Radio, and the "Speak Up Sis" podcast, and she has contributed to publications such as "Our Journee Home" magazine.


A graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University with degrees in Business & Progressive Leadership, and valedictorian of the Advanced Ministry Institutes, Jan is currently furthering her studies in Communications & Public Relations. She holds certifications as a grief coach (ICF) and Mental Health First Aider from the National Council for Mental Well-Being.


As the founder and CEO of She Moves Forward, Inc., Jan offers comprehensive grief coaching through individual and group sessions. Her approach to healing is encapsulated in her philosophy, "The moment I allowed myself to feel is the moment I chose to heal." Jan passionately advocates for "HEALING FORWARD," guiding others through their grief with her unique blend of personal experience and professional expertise.
